One of John Huston’s finest moments as well as one of Bogart’s, who plays—rather than his usual antihero—a total piece of shit. And you get to watch Huston’s father, the inimitable Walter Huston, directed by his son. Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a film about the true underbelly of the American west, in which two shiftless drifters and a kindhearted old prospector set off into deepest Mexico on a quest for gold. A tale of greed, irony, and justice, it was based on the novel by the mysterious writer B. Traven—a man whose real identity is debated to this day.
