Set among the Gullah—people of African descent who have lived in the low country of South Carolina and Georgia since the days of slavery, Daughters of the Dust is set at the turn of the 20th century on a small island just off the coast. Rich imagery, an elliptical story structure, and dialogue in the Gullah’s mellifluous dialect give the film an otherworldly feel. It’s about how generations divide families, and also the questions of which traditions children will carry on and which ones they’ll abandon.
